The 4th annual Watertown Burger Battle kicks off on Jan. 15 at various spots in and around the city. The 2026 edition is a community-wide food showdown where local restaurants compete for the coveted title of Best Burger.
Hosted by the Watertown Area Chamber of Commerce, this mouthwatering competition runs through Feb. 28, featuring one-of-a-kind burgers created by local Chamber-member restaurants. Whether you enjoy a classic or a modern slant on your burger, there is something for everyone.

There’s also a philanthropic aspect, with each participating business paired with a local nonprofit, meaning every burger purchased gives some money back to the community.
Organizers say participants are encouraged to try as many burgers as they can, turning the contest into a local food tour.
The general public serves as the judges, with “People’s Choice” voting online at wtnburgerbattle.com. Ratings for each burger are on taste, appearance and originality.

Burger lovers can also complete punch cards while visiting each location for a chance to win prizes. Voting closes at 9 p.m. on the last day of February, with the Burger Battle champion announced on March 4.
“This promotion turns the coldest part of the year into something people genuinely look forward to,” Watertown Chamber of Commerce Director of Community Engagement Ashley Johnson told the Public Opinion. “There’s something for everyone – whether you love classic flavors or are more adventurous.”
Johnson, who is spearheading the event, noted that Burger Battle is not only a great time for customers, but also for others.
“It is a huge boost to our food and beverage members at a typically slow part of their year,” she explained. “Seeing the event expand beyond Watertown, really speaks to how much momentum Burger Battle has built over the years.”
The first edition of Burger Battle — which occurred in several communities across South Dakota — was in early 2023. The event is part of various promotions to help businesses thrive during the slower, post-Christmas winter season.
