Kerala local body polls: UDF secures majority in Kannur Corporation, set to form council

Delivering a major setback to the Left Democratic Front, the UDF has secured a majority in the Kannur Corporation by winning 37 seats in the 56 division council, ensuring its return to power.

In the Kannur Corporation, where of the total 1,93,079 voters, 1,35,780 people had cast their vote, the LDF finished a distant second with 14 seats, while the NDA won four seats. Besides retaining the existing ward of Pallikunnu, the NDA also won the Kokkenpara, Thulicheri and Temple wards. The SDPI also secured one seat from Arakkal ward.

Several prominent LDF leaders faced defeat. P.K. Ragesh lost from Panikkara, former State Sports Council president O.K. Vineesh was defeated from Thalikkavu and former standing committee chairperson K.P. Sabira lost from Arakkal.

Meanwhile, three rebel candidates who contested against the UDF in Payyambalam (K.N. Bindu), Varam (K.V. Riyas) and Adikadalayi (V. Muhammadali) wards were also defeated, consolidating the UDF’s position in the Corproation.
