The Perambra police on Wednesday registered a case under the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act against a group of Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) workers for allegedly barging into the Changaroth grama panchayat office, vandalising its premises, and humiliating the outgoing panchayat president by resorting to “caste slur” during post-election celebrations.
The case was registered on a complaint by Unni Vengeri, the outgoing panchayat president, to the Deputy Superintendent of Police, Perambra. According to him, the incident occurred on December 13, shortly after the announcement of the local body election results.
In his complaint, Mr. Vengeri, a Left Democratic Front (LDF) leader, alleged that the IUML workers, along with around 25 others, had barged into the office, damaged office accessories, and sprayed cow dung water on the premises “as a purification exercise” while shouting abusive slogans.
Mr. Vengeri, who belongs to a Scheduled Caste community, claimed that the act was aimed at insulting him and others from his community.
LDF activists had staged a protest in the area condemning the alleged humiliation of their leader.
