The mother of a missing nine-year-old girl has been arrested on suspicion of murder after her daughter was found dead in Utah, police have said.
Melodee Buzzard’s decomposed body was found by a man and woman who were taking pictures in a rural area of Utah, earlier this month.
Her 40-year-old mother Ashlee Buzzard was taken into custody on Tuesday and is being held on suspicion of first-degree murder, the Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s office said.
Melodee Buzzard had been missing for months and investigators said her mother had not been cooperating with the investigation.
“This is an extraordinarily tragic case involving the murder of a child by the very person she relied upon and trusted the most,” Santa Barbara County Sheriff-Coroner Bill Brown said in a statement.
Melodee Buzzard was first reported missing by her school on 14 October who said she had not been seen since August, police said.
Her mother could not explain where her daughter was to authorities, and detectives searched the Buzzard home the next day.
The last time the nine-year-old was seen was 9 October, when a security camera caught the mother and daughter on the Colorado-Utah border, according to the sheriff’s office.
Sheriff Brown said the authorities believe the young girl was murdered shortly after she was seen on the security camera.
He also said investigators have “recovered a significant amount of evidence that clearly indicates the crime was committed by Ashlee Buzzard, Melodee’s mother”.
Police said the couple who discovered Melodee Buzzard’s body, which was off the side of the road with gunshot wounds, called the authorities on 6 December.
DNA analysis determined the identity of the remains on 22 December, Sheriff Brown said.
Ashlee Buzzard was arrested on an unrelated charge of false imprisonment in early November. She allegedly held a man against his will after he said he had been helping search for her daughter.
A judge later dismissed the felony false imprisonment charge against her.
