Crypto adopted AI faster than it learned to govern it, and the gap between adoption and risk management is becoming dangerous.
The crypto industry adopted AI faster than almost any other financial sector. Models now process signals, monitor risk, and support execution across markets that never close. But the governance around those systems has not kept up.
Anthropic recently revealed that attackers used roughly 24,000 fake accounts to run more than 16 million interactions with Claude, exposing just how fragile shared model infrastructure has become. This isn’t an edge case, it’s a preview of what coordinated infrastructure attacks look like at scale, and crypto markets are a high-value target.
Prediction Was Never Going to Be Enough
The first generation of AI trading tools was built to be fast. They scanned headlines, ranked sentiment, flagged chart patterns, and helped traders cut through noise in a market that never stops producing it. That’s still important, but faster signals only help when the market is stable enough for those signals to mean something.
The problem starts when conditions suddenly change (and they always do). Crypto’s 24-hour trading cycle and global fragmentation make it uniquely exposed and there is no closing bell that forces a reset. A model designed to chase returns can become a liability once volatility spikes, liquidity thins, or leverage unwinds. A pattern that prints money on Monday can disappear by Tuesday.
The even bigger problem is what happens when many of these systems react at once. Crypto trades on tight feedback loops, and when dozens of automated strategies respond to the same signal at the same time, a local move can turn into a market-wide event. The Bank of England raised exactly this concern in its 2025 financial stability review. The review warned specifically that AI-driven correlation could amplify systemic shocks rather than absorb them.
Crypto has already proven this more than once. Last October, a tariff shock triggered more than $19 billion in liquidations in under 24 hours. Order-book depth on major venues dropped by over 90%, and several exchanges went down entirely. The signals were there, but the tools most traders relied on weren’t built to read them. What the market needed was a system that could spot liquidity draining across venues and pull back before the cascade started. The lesson wasn’t that AI failed, it’s that prediction-only systems have no defensive mode.
What a Hardened Risk Architecture Requires
The better version of AI in crypto watches the plumbing. Time-series models track volatility, funding rates, and order-book depth across venues at the same time, while anomaly detectors scan for things that don’t fit. That means unusual on-chain flows, gaps between quoted and executed liquidity, or sudden bursts of coordinated social activity. These are the signals that show up before a crisis becomes obvious.
But raw detection on its own is only half the job. Before any language model tries to explain a situation, the system should already have pulled verified context from exchange status pages, blockchain telemetry, and public disclosures.
Knowledge graphs can then map how a problem in one place might spread through collateral pairs, bridge routes, stablecoins, and connected venues. That kind of context is what separates a useful alert from noise. Think of it as a contagion map that updates in real time, not a post-mortem written after the damage is done.
Language models have a role in this stack, but it’s a narrow one. They work well for explanation, exception triage, and helping teams coordinate under pressure. They are not reliable enough to trigger execution or liquidation decisions on their own. Treating them as execution engines rather than reasoning assistants is one of the most common — and most dangerous — misapplications in the industry right now. Any output from an external model should pass through validation, source checks, and hard risk thresholds before it gets anywhere near capital.
The hardest moment for any system like this is when its own components give conflicting signals. A well-built engine responds by pulling back, cutting size, widening tolerances, or stepping away from the market altogether.
European Regulation Already Demands This
European regulators have moved faster than most on the overlap between AI governance and financial markets. The EU AI Act began phased enforcement in 2025 and classifies AI systems by risk level, with transparency, testing, and governance requirements for high-risk applications. Financial services tools that influence trading, credit, or insurance decisions fall squarely within that scope.
The UK’s FCA has been explicit that it won’t build a separate rulebook for AI. Instead, it expects firms to apply existing frameworks like the Consumer Duty and the Senior Managers and Certification Regime to any AI-driven process. The practical effect is the same as the EU approach. Senior management is accountable, and the fact that a model made the decision doesn’t change that.
MiCA then adds a market-specific layer for crypto. It requires asset service providers to maintain risk management frameworks, governance structures, and operational resilience standards. Together with the AI Act, it creates a regulatory environment that rewards exactly the kind of hardened AI architecture described above. Firms that build defensively now won’t just be compliant, they’ll be structurally more resilient when the next stress event hits.
None of this works without human judgment at the center. People still have to define the objectives, set the risk appetite, decide the escalation paths, and carry the accountability when something goes wrong. AI handles the speed and scale that humans can’t match on their own. But the decisions that shape how much risk the system is allowed to take should never be fully automated.
What Comes Next
Every major crypto crisis has started the same way. The infrastructure that everyone relied on turned out to be untested, and the cost landed on the people who assumed the foundations were solid. Smart contracts had this problem until auditing became standard, and custody had it until institutional-grade solutions caught up.
AI is next in line, but the stakes are different. It sits closer to the decision layer than any previous piece of crypto infrastructure, and when it breaks, everything downstream breaks with it.
The difference this time is that the industry doesn’t have to wait for the failure to start building. The architecture and the regulatory frameworks are already being built. The only question is whether firms treat that as an opportunity or wait until a crisis makes it unavoidable.
