Today we’re talking about breastfeeding—a topic I know will be supportive for so many of you. What I love about this conversation is that my guest offers practical, accessible guidance and helps break down how the mechanics of breastfeeding actually work. Whether you’re preparing, navigating, or simply wanting to better understand the process, this episode is here to support you. Let’s dive in.

On this episode of Yoga | Birth | Babies I am joined by Dr.  Leigh Campbell, MD, IBCLC. Dr. Campbell is among the inaugural cohort of board-certified Breastfeeding & Lactation Medicine physicians and is also a board-certified neonatologist and pediatrician.

In this episode you will learn about:

  • About Dr. Campbell and what led her to medicine and breastfeeding medicine
  • How Breastfeeding Medicine works alongside lactation consultants, and when a family might benefit from that added layer of support
  • What Dr. Campbell wants parents to know who worry that if breastfeeding hurts or isn’t working right away, something is “wrong”
  • How babies actually get milk at the breast, and why latch and positioning matter so much
  • How breastfeeding differentiates from bottle feeding, and what that means for how we help babies learn to feed comfortably
  • Why so many parents are being told their baby might need a procedure, and what families should consider before going that route
  • First things to optimize before talking about surgery, if weight gain is slow or feeding is painful
  • What has changed in how we understand and treat mastitis, and what actually helps in those early stages
  • What Dr. Campbell wants parents to know about the first two weeks after birth in terms of milk supply
  • Structural barriers Dr. Campbell sees most often interfering with early milk production, and how healthcare systems can do better
  • For parents feeling overwhelmed by all the advice, gadgets, and opinions around feeding, a grounding message about how to approach this journey
  • To a parent who feels like feeding hasn’t gone the way they hoped, but still wants to feel confident and supported: some words of encouragement from Dr. Campbell
  • One final tip or piece of advice she would like to offer new and expectant parents
  • Where you can find her work
