UKNIPOne child has died and another has been taken to hospital after a blaze at a house in a Kent village.
Firefighters were called just after 12:00 GMT to an “intense fire” at the semi-detached property on White Admiral Way, in Hamstreet, near Ashford.
Kent Fire & Rescue Service (KFRS) said six fire engines worked hard to put out the flames, which had spread throughout the home.
“Sadly, one child died at the scene,” it continued.
Ann Millington, KFRS chief executive, said: “Our thoughts and deepest condolences are with everyone affected by this tragic incident, especially the child’s loved ones.
“We understand this will be a distressing time for the local community and support is available at a welfare hub set up at Hamstreet Village Hall.”
PA MediaAn investigation into the cause of the fire is ongoing.
Firefighters had previously urged people living nearby or travelling through the area to close windows and doors due to the smoke, but this advice has since been lifted.
KFRS said in an update at 17:45 that it was scaling down its response, with two fire engines and a crew continuing to damp down.
A volunteer response team was on the scene offering crew welfare and support, it added.
