Several drones were shot down on Sunday near northern Iraq’s Erbil airport, where US and international forces, including German soldiers, are stationed at the airport.

A security source told dpa that explosions were heard as drones were shot down. Debris fell in an area under construction near the airport, the source added.

Kurdish news website Rudaw also reported that several explosions were heard in the city, with videos showing black smoke seen from a distance rising into the sky. Another video reportedly showed a projectile being shot down.

An Iraqi pro-Iran militia group, Saraya Awliya al-Dam, said they targeted a US base with drones and rockets, Rudaw added.

The Islamic Resistance in Iraq – an umbrella of pro-Iranian militias in Iraq – claimed 23 operations since the early hours on Sunday, using dozens of drones. The attacks targeted “enemy bases in Iraq and the region.”
