The Congress held a street protest in Srinagar on Sunday (December 21, 2025) over the dropping of Mahatma Gandhi’s name from the MGNREGA scheme by the Centre.
“Mahatma Gandhi lives in the hearts of the people and cannot be removed by paperwork. The BJP is under a delusion. Removing Mahatma Gandhi’s name from official records cannot erase his philosophy,” J&K Congress president and legislator Tariq Hamid Karra said.

Mr. Karra raised anti-government and pro-Gandhi slogans along with his supporters. He said renaming the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee scheme to G RAM G, Viksit Bharat–Guarantee for Rozgar and Aajeevika Mission (Gramin), was unacceptable to the party.
Mr. Karra said the Centre also reset the funding pattern to 60-40, which will increase the burden on States. “Regions like J&K lack resources to meet basic needs such as water, roads, and electricity and cannot afford to bear 40% of the cost,” Mr. Karra said.
