The year 2025 saw houses for the poor in Telangana take shape. The demand for the Indiramma Houses, in extent of 400-600 sq. ft., surged after the Telangana government implemented the housing scheme in rural areas.
Financial assistance of ₹5 lakh is provided to each beneficiary. This year, 2.47 lakh houses were grounded. While the beneficiaries are eagerly waiting to see their finished homes, the spike in cost of construction material continues to bother them.
With the housing scheme for poor put in practice in 2025, Telangana Housing Department wants to bring out an Affordable Housing Policy in 2026 to provide houses for Lower Income Group (LIG) and Middle Income Group (MIG), specifically in urban areas.
Housing and Revenue Minister, Ponguleti Srinivas Reddy, on multiple occasions spoke about plans on houses for people from poor, LIG and MIG in urban areas.
At a panel discussion on Telangana Rising Global Summit 2025 in December, the unmet demand for 20.33 lakh houses among LIG in urban areas and 8.77 lakh in MIG was brought up by Housing Department Secretary, V.P. Gautham. Panelists said that the houses constructed by private companies are not affordable for people from these groups, and they can buy, if constructed to a lesser extent, such as one-bed room houses. Mr. Gautham said that the Affordable Housing Policy will also focus on tapping into private capital, efficiency and nudge them towards construction of the houses.
Regarding the spike in construction material cost, Mr. Gautam said that they have issued information through IEC on the material that can be used to construct the houses to keep the cost within ₹5 lakh and model houses were constructed in this budget.
The auctions, lucky draws to allot flats and plots of the Housing department too made it to headlines. Over ₹1,000 crore was generated, which, the official said, will be used for the housing projects.
