Old bridge at Feroke converted into food street

As part of the Tourism department’s initiative to develop untapped destinations, the unused old bridge over the Vadakkumbad river at Kallampara near Feroke has been converted into a vibrant food street.

The project, implemented at a cost of ₹98 lakh, is part of the department’s initiative to repurpose old bridges for public use.

Officials said that the objective of the food street project was to provide a space where people could relax at any time and enjoy their favourite dishes.

The old bridge, which had fallen into disrepair and was overgrown with vegetation, has now been given a new look. The damaged handrails have been refurbished, and the surface has been paved with stones. Painting, electrification, and related works have also been carried out. Seating arrangements, a cafeteria, small kiosks, decorative lighting, ornamental plants, and a clean walkway are among the facilities included in the first phase.

As part of the widening and development of the Feroke–Kadalundi road in 2005, a new bridge was constructed across the river at Kallampara. After the new bridge was opened to traffic in February 2006, the old bridge remained unused.

Later, following the installation of the Japan water supply scheme distribution network towards Kadalundi, the bridge became overgrown and was frequently occupied by anti-social elements. Authorities subsequently decided to convert it into a food street after receiving a proposal.

The project is expected to give a major fillip to the Kallampara–Mannur Valavu area and attract more tourists to the region.

The food street was inaugurated by Tourism Minister P.A. Mohamed Riyas on Monday (February 16).
