The Election Commission of India (ECI) has flagged over 1.36 crore voters through progeny mapping in West Bengal after the first phase of the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) process of the electoral roll, according to data shared on Tuesday (December 16). The Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) of West Bengal said that the claims and objections period to contest these issues will go on until January 15.
“More than 50% of the mismatch during progeny mapping is the father’s name mismatch. There can be cases where names have been legally changed, but software does not identify this, a proper verification process will solve this issue,” said CEO Manoj Kumar Agarwal after the draft electoral roll was published on the ECI website in the afternoon.
Mr. Agarwal said that all genuine mismatches will be resolved easily, and the other cases will get a hearing notice. Officials also assured that Booth Level Officers (BLO) have the data of the people, and they will conduct a verification of these mismatches and discrepancies.
Progeny mapping is a process where if a voter is themselves does not present in the 2002 electoral roll, they can establish blood relations in names in the 2002 list like their father, mother, grandparents, and others – then they can be part of the progeny mapping process. People whose names are there in the 2002 electoral rolls will come under self mapping.
The total number of discrepancy cases is 1.62 crore, which have been found through “logical discrepancies like father name mismatch, parent age difference below 15 years or above 50 years, and more such categories. However, many of the voters have multiple discrepancies; hence, the number of voters who have discrepancies is 1.36 crore in the first phase of the SIR process in West Bengal. There were more than 7 categories of discrepancies.
If voters have objections to any of the flagged discrepancies, they can file a complaint with the District Magistrate, if they are still unsatisfied with the clarification or findings, they can file a second complaint with the CEO, the CEO office said on Monday.
