The Tirupati Urban Development Authority (TUDA) has planned to prepare a detailed project report on the comprehensive development of Tirupati, in coordination with Irrigation department and international agencies like ICLEI – Local Governments for Sustainability (South Asia).
Based on a request made by TUDA Chairman C. Divakar Reddy during his recent visit to New Delhi, a team from ICLEI – LGS (South Asia) Secretariat director Soumya Chaturvedula and deputy secretary-general Eemani Kumar visited Tirupati on Tuesday.
The team reached Perumallapalli village and interacted with the local panchayat officials and villagers on making it a ‘climate smart’ village. They looked at the existing drainage systems, LED lights, solid wealth processing centre, sewage water management systems, among others. The team agreed to provide a concept note based on the village population, which TUDA could later replicate to develop similar ‘climate resilient’ villages.
At Perur and Avilala tanks, the team held discussions with TUDA Secretary N.V. Sreekanth Babu and Executive Engineer (Irrigation) Venkateswara Prasad about the supply channels. Mr. Sreekanth Babu explained that Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu had envisioned the development of Tirupati as a ‘city of lakes and tanks’, under which the district machinery had forwarded proposals to the government for rejuvenation of 20 tanks in the first phase.
