The investment is set to help enhance Positive Carbon’s AI suite and support its continued international expansion.

Positive Carbon, the Dublin AI start-up tackling food waste, has secured a strategic investment from Redesdale Food and Beverage Fund, with co-investment from Enterprise Ireland. Details of the investment were not disclosed.

Backed by Irish VC Redesdale, Enterprise Ireland and Lord Abbett among others, the €75m Redesdale Food and Beverage Fund supports Irish food, beverage and nutrition start-ups.

The fund has backed the likes of Cork-based Kwayga.com, Fiid, a start-up producing plant-based convenience meals, and, more recently, AI food-tech Talio.

The latest strategic investment into Positive Carbon is expected to help enhance the start-up’s AI and product-suite capabilities that deliver insights for kitchen teams.

The investment will also help Positive Carbon in its international expansion efforts as the start-up eyes a wider market across the UK, Europe and abroad. The start-up first expanded into the UK in 2024.

Founded by Aisling and Mark Kirwan, Positive Carbon helps commercial kitchens tackle the growing incidence of food waste with AI and lidar technologies, hoping to bring down costs and increase sustainability.

The start-up’s technology is already in use in Croke Park, The Aviva Stadium, The Guinness Storehouse and across several HSE hospitals in the country.

“Securing investment from both Redesdale and Enterprise Ireland is a massive vote of confidence in our technology and our team,” said Mark Kirwan, the CEO of Positive Carbon.

“This funding allows us to not only refine our AI capabilities but also to aggressively expand our footprint internationally. We are committed to giving commercial kitchens the tools they need to turn food waste data into actionable, cost-saving decisions.”

Last year, the start-up announced a partnership with Transgourmet, one of Germany’s largest food service providers. Transgourmet uses Positive Carbon’s AI sensors at a rehabilitation centre in the country, allowing the centre to measure, analyse food production and waste.

“Positive Carbon is a real and practical example of a company helping businesses to both reduce costs and achieve sustainability objectives,” commented John Stapleton, a Partner at Redesdale and a former food tech entrepreneur.
