Members of the Democratic Youth Federation of India (DYFI) and Students Federation of India (SFI) staged a protest at Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel Chowk in Kalaburagi.
DYFI State president Lavitra Vastrad and SFI district president Sarvesh Mavinkar said that the incident shows deep-rooted caste and patriarchal mindset where the freedom of choice of young people, especially women, continues to be denied by society.
Lavitra Vastrad added that honour killing and violence in the name of caste and religion are an assault on Constitutional values.
The agitators demanded that the State government enact a specific law to prevent honour killing, ensure legal protection for Choice Rights of the youth and award stringent punishment to all those involved in such crime.
They also called for awareness programmes to uphold Constitutional values and prevent such incidents.
