India batter Rinku Singh has flown home owing to a family emergency and is in doubt for the next clash against Zimbabwe on February 26 in Chennai. Rinku was not present at India’s training session at the MA Chidambaram Stadium, while the rest of his team-mates were present at the nets on Tuesday evening.
Rinku has had a lean tournament so far. After scores of 6, 1, 11* and 6* in the group-stage matches, he made a duck in India’s 76-run defeat against South Africa in Ahmedabad.
If Rinku is unavailable for the match against Zimbabwe, India’s options on the bench are Sanju Samson and Axar Patel. If India bring in Samson it will lead to a shuffle in the batting order and if they pick Axar, he can slot in at No. 8, where Rinku batted against South Africa.
After the match against Zimbabwe, India’s last Super Eight fixture is opposite West Indies on March 1 in Kolkata. If India make the semi-final, that fixture will be played in Mumbai on March 5 in Mumbai, unless it is against Pakistan, in which case the match will be on March 4 in Colombo.
