The Telangana Legislative Assembly on Sunday passed the Telangana Employees Accountability and Monitoring of Parental Support Bill, 2026, unopposed to make it mandatory for government and private employees, as also the elected representatives either to take care of their old-age parents or pay them 15% of their salary or ₹10,000 per month, whichever is minimum, for sustenance.

Speaking on the Bill, Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy suggested that there was a need to socially boycott the children who fail to take care of their old-aged parents. He explained that the provision of ₹10,000 limit was made as any higher limit would contravene an Act made by the Centre. A suggestion could be made to the Centre to enhance the limit so that it could be followed in the State legislation.

He cited the example of former Raymond Group chairman Vijaypat Singhania, who died on Saturday (March 28), after he was left to fend for himself by his son and the present chairman of the group. He stated that he also knows a former Minister, who neglected his father and was not well taken care of. The Chief Minister said several members of the legislators went to pay condolences to the former Minister after his father died recently.

BJP member Payal Shankar said it was unfortunate that the State Assembly had to make legislation for the welfare of aged parents of employees, but complimented the government for bringing such a bill, the first one by a State Assembly in the country. He suggested stringent action against those who fail to take care of their aged parents.

Speaker of the Assembly G. Prasad Kumar also complimented the government and the Chief Minister for bringing the parental support bill. Members Jaffar Hussain, J. Adinarayana, Konda Surekha and K. Sambasiva Rao also spoke on the bill in its support.
