Almost 16 days after being attacked over racial slurs, 24 year old Angel Chakma breathed his last at a hospital in Dehradun on Thursday (December 25, 2025). Five persons were arrested for the murder of the youth while one accused, a Nepal national, managed to cross the border, police said.
According to the FIR lodged on the complaint of Michel Chakma, brother of the deceased, he and his brother had gone to market in Selakui locality on the evening of December 09. While the two were buying some household things, a few drunk men started using cast based slurs against the deceased.
“When my brother objected to their caste based slurs, the accused persons attacked him with a knife and a rod…..,” the FIR filed on December 12, reads.
The complainant further informed that he has taken his injured brother to a private hospital. He added that he is afraid that the accused will once again attack on him and his brother as they are ‘influential persons’.
According to sources in the hospital, Angel had suffered deep wound on head and neck and he died after battling for life for almost 16 days.
Deceased’s father, a BSF jawan posted in NE, has taken the body for last rites, to his hometown, sources said.
Speaking to The Hindu, SSP Dehradun, Ajay Singh said that the police managed to arrest five of the accused persons and legal action is also being taken against the 6th accused, who is a resident of Nepal.
“One of the arrested youth is from Manipur while four are native of Uttarakhand. We have initially lodged an FIR for assault and murder charges are being added after the death of the youth,” he said.
