Virajpet schoolboy loses finger in firecracker mishap

A schoolboy lost a finger after attempting to light an unexploded firecracker at Kaikeri in Virajpet taluk of Kodagu district.

The injured boy has been identified as 14-year-old Pavan, a Class 7 student and a native of Devarapura Paisari. He was visiting his relatives at Kaikeri when he picked up an unexploded firecracker lying outside and tried to set it off. The firecracker accidentally exploded in his left hand, causing injuries.

Pavan was immediately shifted to the district hospital in Madikeri, where doctors said all his fingers were seriously injured. One finger had to be amputated, while the remaining fingers were surgically treated.

Upon receiving information about the incident, Rajiv Gandhi Panchayat Raj Organisation district president Thenniyar Maina visited the hospital and informed Virajpet MLA and Chief Minister’s Legal Adviser A.S. Ponnanna, who was attending the Belagavi session of the legislature.

Mr. Ponnanna directed officials to ensure that the boy is provided proper treatment free of cost. He also instructed the District Surgeon to refer the child to hospitals in Mysuru or Mangaluru if advanced treatment is required.
