Altogether 722 candidates, including 59 women, contested the April 9 election.
Apart from Himanta Sarma and Gaurav Gogoi, in the fray are Ministers Pijush Hazarika, Jayanta Malla Baruah, Ashok Singhal, and Ranoj Pegu (BJP), Debabrata Saikia (Congress), All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) chief Maulana Badruddin Ajmal, Raijor Dal president Akhil Gogoi, Asom Gana Parishad president Atul Bora, Assam Jatiya Parishad president Lurinjyoti Gogoi and United People’s Party Liberal (UPPL) president Pramod Boro.
The AIUDF and UPPL have not aligned with either the BJP or Congress in the elections.
The Congress has fielded the most candidates at 99, followed by the BJP (90), the AIUDF (30), the AGP (26), and the UPPL (19).
Assam has a total of 2,50,54,463 voters — 1,25,31,552 males, 1,25,22,593 females, and 318 transgender.
