Interlinking of Cheyyar, Then Pennai, and Palar rivers remains a key point of discussion among a cross section of voters in Polur Assembly constituency in Tiruvannamalai district since elections were held for the Assembly seat way back in 1952.

There are reasons. More than 90 percent of residents in the constituency depend on agriculture. Then, Cheyyar river, which is a lifeline for residents in the region, remains seasonal; however, the irrigation network facilitates cultivation. “Except for a few months, Cheyyar river remains bone-dry. Water from Cheyyar river remains a key water source for irrigation and domestic consumption,” said A. Suresh, a native of Polur.
