North India gripped by severe cold wave; Rajasthan’s Fatehpur coldest at 1.6°C

Punjab, Haryana, and Rajasthan continue to reel under an intense cold wave, with Fatehpur in Rajasthan’s Sikar district being the coldest place in the state on Wednesday night (December 24, 2025) at 1.6 degrees Celsius. This was followed by by Nagaur at 1.9 degree Celsius and Lunkaransar in Bikaner at 3.5 degrees Celsius.

According to India Meteorological Department (IMD), Amritsar recorded a lowest of 5.7 degrees Celsius. Major cities in Punjab, including Ludhiana and Patiala, recorded the identical lows of 6.4 degrees Celsius, while Pathankot logged a minimum of 6.7 degrees Celsius. Bathinda also saw a dip in temperature at 5.6 degrees Celsius and Gurdaspur at 5.5 degrees Celsius. Chandigarh, capital of the two states, recorded a minimum of 6.9 degrees Celsius.

In neighbouring Haryana, Ambala recorded a minimum temperature at 7.9 degrees Celsius, while Hisar logged 5.6 degrees Celsius. Likewise, Karnal registered 6.8 degrees Celsius, Narnaul 5 degrees Celsius, while Rohtak, Bhiwani and Sirsa registered minimum temperatures of 6.8, 6 and 6.2 degrees Celsius, respectively. Ludhiana and Patiala also did not see any respite from the cold wave, recording identical lows of 6.4 degrees Celsius, while Pathankot logged a minimum of 6.7 degrees Celsius. Bathinda experienced cold weather with 5.6 degrees Celsius and Gurdaspur recorded a low of 5.5 degrees Celsius.

Meanwhile in Rajasthan, Dausa recorded a minimum of 4.4 degrees, Churu 4.9 degrees and Alwar 5 degrees Celsius. Vanasthali in Tonk recorded a minimum of 5.2 degrees Celsius, while Pali and Jhunjhunu stood at 5.7 degrees each. Pilani recorded 5.8 degrees and Ajmer 6.5 degrees Celsius. Faridkot being the coldest place, recorded a minimum of 4.3 degrees Celsius on Thursday (December 25, 2025).

In Jaipur, chilly winds pushed the temperature down to 8.8 degrees Celsius, while Jaisalmer recorded 10.9 degrees and Pratapgarh 12.4 degrees Celsius. Meanwhile, tea stalls did brisk business while bonfires were seen at several public places on Wednesday night (December 24, 2025) and Thursday morning (December 25, 2025) as residents struggled to cope with the chill.

According to the IMD, minimum temperatures over northwest India are expected to fall gradually by 2 to 4 degrees Celsius over the next two days, with no significant change thereafter for the subsequent five days. Cold wave conditions are very likely to occur in isolated areas of Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, Rajasthan, Chhattisgarh and Jharkhand between December 25 and 27.

The IMD said minimum temperatures over the remaining parts of the country are likely to show no significant variation during the next seven days. The weather agency has advised people to take precautions against cold conditions, particularly during night and early morning hours.
