Friedrich Merz has criticized the United States, saying it appears weak in its dealings with Iran as tensions continue to grow in the region.

Speaking in Germany, Merz said Iran has outplayed the U.S. in recent talks by avoiding real negotiations. He pointed to failed diplomatic efforts and warned that the situation is damaging U.S. credibility on the global stage.

European leaders’ increasing frustration stems from concerns about a protracted, costly conflict. Many also feel they were not properly consulted before the U.S. took action.

Trump has pushed for a tougher stance, but negotiations with Iran have stalled. Planned talks in Pakistan were canceled, adding to concerns that diplomacy is not moving forward.

European leaders, including Emmanuel Macron and Keir Starmer, have voiced caution. They fear deeper involvement could worsen the conflict and increase economic pressure at home.

The conflict has escalated European energy costs, shifting reliance and straining economies.

Merz warned that wars are hard to control once they begin. He pointed to past conflicts in Afghanistan and Iraq as examples of how quickly situations can spiral.

As talks remain stalled, European leaders are calling for calm while preparing for the risk of further escalation.
